Do's and Don'ts
Do not register the car or unregister it now – see below (!)
Get the car’s MSO – Manufacture Statement of Origin – see below (^) (almost impossible)
Either don’t carry a driver’s license or return it to the DMV (many people do the latter). The Driver's License implies one is a driver (working to earn money) operating a motor vehicle. Instead, carry a Passport to show that you are a traveler or get a Foreign Driver's License from ANPC!
Become a non-citizen, non-resident, private American, of one of the 50 American states. That is, change your citizenship status from US citizen (a.k.a. resident alien). Resident aliens may be required to have a driver’s license since they do not have an un-a-lien-able right to travel.
Know the language. The policé/policy officers are trained to get you to admit to being a "driver" who is “driving” a "motor vehicle." It’s truly a mind-bender for new people. But remember, if you are not getting paid, you are not driving! You are a traveler who is traveling and who has free access to all public highways, roadways, streets, avenues, etc. per many, many court decisions.
(!) Do not register the car! Do not give them the title!
As noted in the above section, registering your private car is not the smartest step you can take. Do not register your car unless you want the State to have jurisdiction over the car and be subject to all the rules and laws of the roadways.
This is the ignorant steps we take: buy a car from a dealer or a private individual, walk into the DMV, give them the title, ‘register’ the vehicle, ultimately place a sticker and a shiny license plate on the vehicle, technically confirming that the vehicle belongs to the state (with our blessing). In the process, we once again inform the State that we are a resident...to which many other laws apply that we touch upon on other pages of this website. Then, once we have the vehicle on the road, police officers might pull us over to give us a ticket because we're not following the rules of the road that are designed for commercial vehicles only.
The above actions are performed voluntarily by us because we have been taught that the above steps are the only way to drive or travel in a car legally. But with a little research, we discover that we have been lied to by every government employee who has ever spoken to a customer. Of course, most of the government employees do not realize they are not informing us of the truth as they have also been lied to to the extent that they believe what they are telling us. The codes and laws tell a different story however. By reading the above rules of the road, we realize the spurious, fallacious, misleading, sophistic, and illusory nature of all that we have been taught regarding motor vehicles, driving, drivers, licenses, registrations, and insurance. The illusory 'rules' of the road are but money generators for the States and the insurance companies. The 'rules' have nothing to do with (most of) us. And if we state that we are a resident of the State, then that means (unbeknownst to any of us) that we are resident aliens (a.k.a. U.S. citizens) and actually do not have the right to travel as a traveller within these United States. So, to fully understand the concept of 'resident,' 'resident alien,' and 'U.S. citizen,' you need to read the following pages on this site: Certificate of Birth, Passport, Social Security, United States, and US citizen vs state National.

(^) Manufacture Statement of Origin / Certificate of Origin
To truly own a car, the Manufacturer Statement of Origin (MSO) or Manufacturer Certificate of Origin (MCO) needs to be obtained. Whomever has this is the rightful owner. For instance, if a car is purchased within the State of Indiana and needs to be shipped to Greece, then Border Customs of USA will request the MSO or MCO. The dealership has the MSO or MCO for all new vehicles. When a car is sold on the lot, the dealer brings the MCO to the State who then converts the MCO to a Certificate of Title which is eventually given to the buyer of the vehicle, the 'owner.' But, in reality, the State which possesses the MCO holds ownership of said vehicle.
Again, the dealer sends the MSO or MCO, along with other paperwork, to the DMV upon sale of the vehicle to the new 'owner'. The DMV then ‘splits the title’ meaning the new 'owner' gets to possess the vehicle but because the State retains possession of the MCO, the State owns the vehicle. You receive a certificate of title, but not the true Title as that remains with the State.
Part of the process of asserting one’s right to travel (not drive) freely is to get the MSO or MCO. With new cars, this is possible but not easy. With cars already registered with DMV, it’s more difficult, but still essential.
Some dealers know the story behind the MCO/MSO; most do not. CarMax will provide the MSO with advance notice.
